Catalogs of photos and squeezes

section editor: Michael ARNUSH (Classics Department, Skidmore College)

Ectypa: Berlin

http://www.bbaw.de/vh/ig/ectypa/index.html“Lists squeezes of hitherto published inscriptions which are preserved in the epigraphic archives of the Inscriptiones Graecae at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. The arrangement of the list is similar to the geographic distribution displayed in the Corpus Inscriptionum Graecarum: After Europe you will find Asia Minor, the Near East and Africa, followed by inscriptions of unknown origin preserved in museums. Colleagues who are interested in consulting the squeezes are welcome to our archives. By the help of this list they are henceforth enabled to check in advance whether a squeeze is available here or not.”

Art and Archaeology of Attica

http://www.davidgill.co.uk/attica/default.htmDavid Gill explains his site as providing “some photographic resources to explore some of the archaeological monuments of the city of Athens and the surrounding countryside of Attica.” Images are grouped into several areas of the city of Athens(Acropolis, Agora, Kerameikos, Pnyx) as well as various other parts of Attica (various cemeteries, the Piraeus, Eleusis, Sounion, Brauron and Thorikos). Many major sites and monuments are well represented, as are a number of important reliefs, stelae and inscriptions (including some textual close-ups). Bibliography is usually provided for the sculpture and inscriptions.

Centro CIL II

http://www2.uah.es/imagines_cilii/“In the new edition of Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum, vol. II: Inscriptiones Hispaniae Latinae (CIL II2), which is coordinated by Armin U. Stylow, there have appeared until now the following parts: Conventus Astigitanus (CIL II2/5; 1998), Cordubensis (CIL II2/7; 1995) and Tarraconensis South (CIL II2/5 fasc. 1; 1995). Economic considerations have not allowed us to publish illustrations of more than a small selection of important inscriptions on plates and figures in the text … On this web page we offer the full graphical documentation we possess on [these] inscriptions. In addition … [it] provides hyperlinks to the Epigraphical Data Bank of the Academy of Heidelberg, created by Prof. Géza Alföldy, where the corresponding texts of the inscriptions can be consulted.”

Corpus of Bithynia and Pontus

http://www.gnomon.ku-eichstaett.de/LAG/IGEyst_3.htmlA computerised corpus of all the Inscriptions of Bithynia and Pontus is presently in preparation, sponsored by the “Schwerpunktprogramm” of the “Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft” (DFG) for “Historische Grundlagenforschung im antiken Kleinasien – Epigraphik, Numismatik und Geographie”. The Greek texts are, and will be, part of the IGEyst on CD. In addition, a very detailed database – including the texts of Bithynia-Pontus – is in preparation. Searching the material is made easy by various query templates. This “Infobase for Bithynia and Pontus” will be made available on disk, for a token fee (“Schutzgebühr”). At the same time, a trial version of this database is online, less the formatting and the query templates.

Epigraphische Datenbank Heidelberg

http://www.uni-heidelberg.de/institute/sonst/adw/edh/A long-term database project for the registration of Roman inscriptions, EDH aims at cataloging and presenting Latin inscriptions from all parts of the Roman Empire. Texts of all inscriptions are revised after a thorough bibliographic review and consultation of photographs or the stone itself (the project has access to approximately 21,000 photographs of Roman inscriptions from the Epigraphische Photothek Heidelberg). The entire database (texts, bibliography, and photographs) is being gradually made available via the Internet (33,000 texts plus images of inscriptions from CIL VI 8,2 and CIL VI 8,3, as of 29 September 2002). Since September 2002 the full content of the database (all inscriptions and all data fields) has been accessible over the internet. Updates are made twice annually. Plans include eventual online linkage to the Epigraphische Bibliographie Heidelberg (EBH), and to the photographic archives Epigraphische Fotothek Heidelberg (EBH). Directed by Géza Alföldy, the project operates under the auspices of the Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften.

The site provides texts (diplomatic and critical) and translations of relevant inscriptions in a variety of ancient languages and scripts. The long-term aim is comprehensive inclusion of all Latin inscriptions, using a simplified representation scheme for the texts that nonetheless takes account of supplements, completions and omissions. At last check (September 2002), the database included 164,804 inscriptions from 420 different publications. Searches are possible by publication, province, place or town and one or two text phrases. Transcribed texts that have not yet been added to the databank are available for download as plain text files. The site is operated under the auspices of theAncient History Seminar at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt am Main.

Images from the Cox Archive: MAMA IX-X (Oxford)

http://www.csad.ox.ac.uk/MAMA/The archive of notebooks, photographs and squeezes from Sir Christopher Cox’s two Phrygian expeditions in 1925 and 1926 which formed the basis for Barbara Levick’s and Stephen Mitchell’s publication of volumes IX and X of Monumenta Asia Minoris Antiqua in 1988 and 1993 have been deposited in the Oxford Centre by Dr. Levick. Both MAMA IX and X were published with extensive photographic documentation, but the constraints of publication costs and processes prevented the excellent negatives from Cox’s expeditions from being printed at larger than contact print size. As a complement to the full editions of the texts of the inscriptions in MAMA IX and X, high resolution digitised images of the photographs and supporting material are being made available from the CSAD WWW server.
